In 1940, the technical officials of the Red Army decided to develop a successor for the aged heavy artillery tractor
Komintern.
The new vehicle should be faster than the
Komintern and still equally capable of towing even the heaviest artillery pieces and tanks.
The result was a 15.5 tons monster, 6.22 m in length, 2.35 m in width and 2.74 m in height, with a crew of 3 men and 16 additonal passengers.
Driven by a huge 350 hp engine the
Voroshilovez could reach 36 km/h on roads and traverse 270 km on its own fuel.
Thus being a truly fast prime mover, it wasn't still fast enough to entirely escape the advancing German troops in 1941.
