Heavy Wrecker M1, 10-ton, 6x6, WardLaFrance 1000 Series 3
The Heavy Wreckers were among the most versatile vehicles produced for the U.S.Army during WW2.
As the Red Army was lacking just that sort of truck, the fact that only a small batch of 101 samples were delivered during the course of Lend-Lease is somewhat surprising.
The Ward LaFrance Truck Company of Elmira, New York, was the main supplier, with the Kenworth Company, Seattle, as co-producer.
From 1941 on, WardLaFrance delivered his Model 1000 resulting in no less than 5 Series differing mainly by the crane and winch equipment.
It can be assumed that the 101 wreckers going to the Soviet Union were part of a batch of 365 Series 3 produced exclusively for Lend-Lease in 1942 and probably delivered in 1943.
They were easily recognizable by the second Gar Wood winch installed to the rear and the sparewheel relocated to the right crane tower side.
The boom could be rotated in a 180 degrees radius and with the outriggers and boom jacks installed was capable of lifting no less than almost 10 metric tons.
