Among the weapons the Red Army lacked the most during the war were the so-called Armoured Personal Carriers (»APC«), designed to »transport cargo and personnel in combat zone«.
Once again the »arsenal of democracy« could be helpful as the American industry, inspired by the great combat success of the German »Halbketten«, was already in mass production of armoured halftracks.
The M2, built by Autocar and White from 1941 on, can be easily identified by the shortened fighting compartment allowing only a limited crew of 10.
It was among the first halftracks to be delivered to the Soviet Union around the winter of 1942/43 and, mainly supplied to the Russian southern Fronts, served there successfully as artillery prime mover (though the rubber tracks lost some performance on soft ground), as command vehicle and in the reconnaissance units of the Red Amy.
