M3's on the Volkhov, July 1942
In July 1942, the 61st Army of the Western Front launched the Volkhov offensive in order to liberate the Orlovsky region.
Among the armored units involved in the operation was the 192nd Tank Brigade (14 M3s "Lee", 31 M3l "Stuart", 2 "Matilda").

About her actions information can be gleaned from the following report:

"On July 5, 1942 at 5 h 50, after heavy air and artillery preparation, the 149th Infantry Division , in collaboration with the 192nd Tank Brigade went on the offensive. By 6 h 40 min tank units seized Bliznov and Kabbalah.

Infantry came under heavy enemy fire, behind the tanks and advanced very slowly.
This forced the armored units several times to return to the infantry, which led to additional losses of tanks.
The commander of the 192nd Tank Brigade, Colonel Petrov, then threw his reserve (T-60 and T-70 light tanks) into the battle, but at this time the infantry was already cut off.
Besides, the Red Airforce, instead of helping the ground troops, lost orientation and, despite of air identification markings on the tanks roofs, struck hit the192nd Brigade, who held Bliznov.
As a result 6 tanks were destroyed.

At the same time the 68th Tank Brigade (11 KB, 6 T-34, 15 T-60), attached to the adjacent 342-th Infantry Division, erroneously confused 192nd Tank Brigade for enemy tanks and fired into them for 30 minutes, whereupon a few tanks were damaged.
By the end of July 5, 192nd Tank Brigade suffered heavy losses, loosing 40 out of 47 tanks to enemy action, mines and "friendly fire", and was derived from the battle and retreated to their original positions."
