In order to fulfill the demand for an armoured artillery tractor, capable of towing the 76mm F-22 divisional gun, the design bureau at the Voroshilov factory N° 174 developed an artillery tractor based on the T-26 light tank chassis.
Between 1933 and 1936 two production variants were tested and manufactured: The T-26T with canvas (usually referred to as T-26T2) and the T-26T with armoured cab.
Both versions were completely unarmed and usually carried a crew of 5 men plus driver resulting in a combat weight of 7 tons.
Production totalled to only 201 T-26T2 and 10 T-26T, all of them being in service at the outbreak of hostilities in June 1941.
Some T-26T even remained in service until the end of World War 2 and were still in combat use during the Manchurian operation in August 1945.
