T-34/85 Medium Tank
T-34/85 Medium Tank in Berlin — Flattened" turret, ZIS S-53 gun
Built at Zavod No183 Nizhni Tagil, early 1944 During the battle for the Seelowe Heights on the approaches to Berlin, tankers of the 11th Tank Corps and several other units created improvised anti-panzerfaust screens by taking bed springs from German homes and fastening them to the turret and hull side.
The aim was to detonate the panzerfaust warhead before it struck the armour, weakening its penetration power.
This T-34/85 of the 36th Tank Brigade, 11th Tank Corps, 1st Guards Tank Army, rests at the foot of the Brandenburg Gate in May 1945 following the capture of Berlin.
Note full-disc roadwheels, unusual for this late production date
