Leyland Retriever
Leyland Retriever, 3-ton 6x4, General Service
Among the first British deliveries to the Soviet Arctic ports of Murmansk and Archangelsk in 1941/42 were a few batches of the Leyland Retriever 3-ton 6x4.
In total, 6542 of the archaic looking vehicle were produced with various bodies, including Breakdown Gantry, Machinery and Bridging, and equipped with a 73 bhp 4-cyl. engine.
Like all 6x4 trucks of this early period, it used the WD-patented rear-bogie and the standard WD-pattern open cab with canvas folding hood and sidescreens.
Other than the Albion BY, the Leyland Retriever was also delivered with a windshield installed.
The installation of the chains and the radiator canvas, as shown on the page top as well as to the right, were part of the preparation for the fierce Russian winters.

Special thanks to Mr. Jochen Vollert, Germany, and Mr. Karl Brandel, Austria, for providing precious informations.
